Forget the minibar. Guests are paying for something else.

Over 75% of guests would rather pay less for features they never use. Instead, they value the fundamentals: A genuinely clean room (82%); A comfortable bed; A good shower; Transparent pricing without hidden costs.

Luxury is losing its appeal. Trust isn't.

A recent survey by easyHotel among Dutch hotel guests delivered a headline that caught everyone's attention:

The minibar is officially passé.

But that's not the real story.

The real insight is much more important for hotels.

Over 75% of guests would rather pay less for features they never use. Instead, they value the fundamentals:

  • A genuinely clean room (82%)
  • A comfortable bed
  • A good shower
  • Transparent pricing without hidden costs

Guests no longer buy luxury.

They buy confidence.

For years hotels competed by adding amenities:

  • bigger lobbies
  • designer interiors
  • minibars
  • turndown service
  • decorative touches

Today's guest asks a different question:

"Can I trust this hotel?"

Cleanliness has become the foundation of that trust.

Interestingly, the study also found that women are even more sensitive to cleanliness than men, with 91% saying they are bothered when a room doesn't feel completely clean.

Clean isn't a promise anymore.

It's proof.

Most hotels still say they're clean.

But guests increasingly expect independent evidence.

Just as food hygiene is inspected...

Just as sustainability is certified...

Why shouldn't room hygiene be independently verified?

The next competitive advantage

Hotels don't need another decorative pillow.

They need greater guest confidence.

Independent hygiene certification helps hotels:

  • build trust before arrival
  • strengthen guest satisfaction
  • reduce uncertainty during booking
  • stand out in an increasingly transparent market

Because guests don't remember the minibar.

They remember whether they felt comfortable enough to sleep.

The future of hospitality is beautifully simple.

Less luxury.

More trust.

And trust starts with cleanliness that can be proven.
