The Hospitality Industry Is Chasing Innovation. Guests Are Still Judging Cleanliness.

The hospitality industry is investing heavily in AI, personalization, sustainability and immersive guest experiences. And rightly so. But while hotels are looking ahead, guests are still making surprisingly simple judgments.

Is the room clean?

According to the AHLA 2025 State of the Industry Report, cleanliness remains one of the most influential factors in hotel selection and the single biggest driver of positive guest experiences and reviews.

That should give the industry pause.

Because at a time when hotels are facing staffing shortages, rising costs and increasing operational pressure, consistency in housekeeping is becoming harder to achieve—not easier.

Guests don't see your processes. They don't see your training programs.They don't see your quality manuals. They see the room:

  • A dusty surface
  • A stained carpet
  • A hair in the bathroom.

And in a world where trust in online information is declining and fake reviews are becoming more common, hotels need more than claims.

They need credibility

The hotels that will stand out in the coming years won't just offer memorable experiences. They will be able to prove that the fundamentals are under control. Because innovation may attract guests. But cleanliness still determines whether they come back.
